Lagardère Active is French media company owned by Lagardère, Its subsidiaries include radio operations, and book and magazine publishers.

History[]

On October 2000, Lagardère brought together all of its audiovisual and new media activities in Europe 1 Communication (radio, advertising and audiovisual) and Lagardère Net (formerly Grolier interactive) under the unique Lagardère Active brand, divided into Lagardère Active Broadcast and Lagardère Active Broadband.

In 2011, the group sold 212 magazine publications for 651 million euros to Hearst Corporation, representing more than 15 times the result of its activities and with a license agreement of 8 million euros per year. Poorly positioned on the Web and highly dependent on advertising, this sale aims to deleverage the group holding and refocus on sport with Sportfive. Didier Quillot left his post after 5 years at the head of Lagardère Active. Arnaud Lagardère announced his departure on November 7, 2011, as well as the appointment of Denis Olivennes to his succession to Lagardère Active's Executive Board Presidency.

In October 2013, group seeks a buyer for a dozen press titles. The magazines Psychologies Magazine, Première, Be Magazine, Pariscope, Maison & Travaux, Le Journal de la Maison, Campagne Décoration, Mon Jardin & Ma Maison, Auto Moto and Union are all concerned in order to focus on its most profitable brands (Elle, Paris Match, Télé 7 Jours, Télé 7 Jeux, Art & Décoration, Le Journal du Dimanche, Version Femina, France DImanche, Ici Paris, Public, Info Bébés and Parents). Management also stated that securities that could not be sold would be stopped.

As this plan to sell shares has all the appearance of an social plan involving 350 permanent employees, Lagardère Active's employees go on strike for 48 hours and threaten the non-publication of the Group's flagship titles. On November 29, after many events, management announced that it was giving up planned layoffs and negotiating a voluntary redundancy plan.

On April 2, 2014, the name of the buyer is announced: it is the consortium 4B Media (Groupe Rossel and Reworld Media). These ten securities with a total value of 55 million in turnover will be sold for a negative value: Lagardère Active will pay to the buyers approximately 15 million euros in order to be able to finance the plans of departure and to fill certain losses

On October 2015, Lagardère Active signs a partnership with Google to boost its digital offer online.

On March 9, 2016, Lagardère Active announced to employee representatives a plan for voluntary departures in its press and advertising activities. Lagardère Active's workforce would increase from 3,500 to 3,300 people, as part of a focus on the audiovisual sector, which accounts for 60% of sales, compared to 40% for the press.

On April 2018, Lagardère Active wants to resell most of its activities (except Europe 1, the JDD, Paris Match and Lagadère Studios) for an amount ranging between 400 and 700 million euros. On April 17, the group sold its European radios to the Czech group Czech Media Invest (CMI) for 73 million euros. On April 19, 2018, the group enters into exclusive negotiations with CMI for the sale of Elle, Version Femina, Télé 7 Jours, France Dimanche, Ici Paris, Public and Art & Décoration.

This desire to sell press titles is part of a strategy of disengagement from the media. Between July and September 2018, the media branch of the group accounted for 196 million euros, or only 10% of the activity.

On November 24, 2018, the radios of Lagardère Active finish leaving the historic seat rue François-Ier to reach premises along the Seine in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.

On February 2019, Groupe M6 announces that it has entered into exclusive negotiations to take over the Lagardère Active television division, except for Mezzo, which will be sold to the Canal+ and LVMH groups. Arnaud Lagardère wishes to recover an amount greater than 200 million euros in this sale.

On February 11, 2019, Lagardère announced that it had sold a 20% interest in South African radio Jacaranda to Kagiso Media for an estimated 233 million rand (€ 15 million), also selling 49.99% of its advertising agency Médiamark for an estimated 30 million rand (about 2 million euros).

On June 28, 2019, the French group Unique Héritage Médias announced that it had entered into exclusive negotiations with Lagardère Active and The Walt Disney Company to buy Disney Hachette Presse. With this sale, Lagardère continues its strategy of disengagement of the media.
