OTV was a Ukrainian music television channel[1]. Since 23 April 2019, the TV channel has been broadcasting in the 16:9 format. On 4 April 2022, the TV channel stopped broadcasting.
History[]
The Kyiv television company "Obriy" was established in the Kharkiv district of Kyiv in 1995. The head of the company was Oleg Stepchenko, who at one time organized one of the first cable networks in the capital in this area. Over time, it ceased to exist as a separate unit, becoming a part of one of the first giant cable providers - Inter-Video Kyiv. As a result, the "Obriy" channel disappeared from the cable television network for a certain period, and later returned as the first music TV channel in Ukraine, "O-TV" as a joint project of the "Obriy" television company and the radio and television project "Hit-parade 12 minus 2". The TV channel "O-TV" began its work on 24 April 1998 in the Microwave Integrated Television and Radio Information System (MITRIS) and through DMX band transmitters. In December of the same year, the channel began broadcasting in all cable networks of Kyiv and the Kyiv region.
Since 30 April 1999, the channel began to be distributed via the AMOS-1 (4.0°W) satellite for cable networks throughout Ukraine. On 10 April 2001, the TV channel "O-TV International" was launched on the LMI-1 satellite, 75° east (and before that there were test activations in a package with UT1). It differed from the domestic Ukrainian version in that it showed foreign clips of post-Soviet performers. Since 12 February 2017, the channel has been broadcast via the Astra 4A satellite.
"O-TV" was the first in Ukraine to introduce an interactive function, thanks to which viewers could call a special phone number during certain hours of the broadcast, ordering their favorite video clip by the code number displayed on the screen. This was used in the "Music Box" and "Your Twenties" projects. The last program summed up the popularity of clips ordered by people.
In the autumn of 2001, broadcasts of the TV channel's programs in the MITRIS system were suspended in Kyiv. The National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting issued "O-TV" a temporary permit for test broadcasting. However, upon its completion, the National Council was in no hurry to resolve this issue. At the same time, disagreements arose between the founders of Obriy TRC. As a result of this process, Oleg Stepchenko left the position of director of the TV channel, taking with him the name, logo and concept of the TV channel, and "Obriy" began to appear under the new name "Music Telebox", or MTB for short.
In the spring of 2004, "O-TV" programs began to be broadcast on air 35 of Kyiv's Gravis channel. On "O-TV" and "Gravis" they claimed that this broadcast was not a rebroadcast, and presented it as a joint product of two TV channels - satellite and broadcast. During this period, two logos were present on the screen — "Gravis" and "O-TV". On 17 August 2005, "Gravis" stopped broadcasting "O-TV" and resumed showing its own programs.
On 16 November 2023, the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting fined the TV channel for refusing to conduct an inspection.
On 21 December of the same year, the National Council again fined the TV channel for refusing to carry out a second inspection.
