RFM TV is French music television network owned by Lagardère Active. The channel broadcasts music videos from 80's and 90's

History[]

AB Groupe launches in December 1996, a bouquet of 20 AB Sat themed channels, where Melody is present as music channel of the bouquet with Musique Classique, the latter broadcasting operas.

On April 10, 1997, AB Groupe launched in partnership with Groupe RMC, Nostalgie la Télé on AB Sat and Canalsatellite Numérique. It targets the same audience as Melody and Nostalgie, that is, from 25 to 49 years old. In May 1997, Nostalgie la Télé replaces Melody.

In 2001, a channel named Mélody was launched and broadcast on all operators.

On April 10, 1997, Nostalgie, then owned by Groupe RMC, launched its declination on television. The channel is then licensed by NRJ Group and AB Groupe. It then transmits from 7am to 2am.

It is then launched at the same time on the bouquets of AB Sat and Canalsatellite, proof of first alliance between these two operators. The target audience is the same as the radio station, that is, 25 to 49 years old.

However after two years, in 1999, the band loses its license to use Nostalgie as a channel name. It is replaced by RFM TV, which issues until 2005.

In July 1999, RFM was broadcast on television by AB Groupe through a licensing agreement with Europe 1 Communication (Lagardère). The new channel was broadcasting from 7 am to 2 am on cable, satellite via the AB Sat and Canal Satellite bouquets and ADSL networks, claiming to reach three million households. The channel replaces Nostalgie la Télé, which AB Groupe had enjoyed since April 1997 a license agreement with RMC, then owner of the radio station Nostalgie.

RFM TV did not renew its license and ceased broadcasting in March 2005 in particular in the face of competition from music channels such as MTV Classics or VH1 but also because AB Groupe had to make space on its transponders to broadcast the new channels of the TNT TMC and NT1 on its bouquet AB Sat. Nevertheless, Arnaud Lagardère, managing director of Lagardère SCA, said he was still interested in television "but not at any price"

On 2 October 2014, at 18:00, RFM TV returned to cable, satellite and ADSL, succeeding MCM Pop, another Lagardère Active cable channel, and the satellite targeting the same audience. More than four million households have potentially access to this new offer. 5 months after its launch, RFM TV beats audience records: it is the 2nd most watched music channel in France.
