Rai 5 is Italian arts television network owned by Rai. The channel broadcasts  programs about art, fashion, dance, opera, theatre, cuisine, travel, and documentary films.

History[]

Rai Sat Extra was born from the experience of Rai Sat Album and Rai Sat Show.

Sky, When it was born from the merger between Stream TV and Tele+ he asked Rai Sat to create a new channel that was not essentially "TV of Memory" but that united the best of television production Rai to quality programs. The project was entrusted to Marco Giudici, principal of Rai Sat Extra late 2009

So, channel 120 from Sky. He was born Rai Sat Extra which in a short time becomes the flagship network of the Rai Sat, the one most appreciated by critics also for quality productions.

The channel changed platform from 31st July 2009, when the contract with Sky was not renewed. Rai makes it available free of charge.

In 18th May 2010, with new logo of Rai. Rai Sat Extra was renamed Rai Extra. The management was directly responsible for Rai, Which absorbed the old inside Rai Sat, once the contract has not been renewed Sky.

In 26th November 2010, the channel is replaced by Rai 5.

The channel then was born on 26th November 2010 in conjunction with the switch-off in Lombardia, from the ashes of Rai Extra. At the birth of the channel the logo of Rai 5 it alternates with that of Rai Extra in order to highlight the transition. The first wave on the new channel is Africa Benedetta with Benedetta Mazzini

In 12th June 2014, The channel becomes part of Rai Cultura, previously known as Rai Educational, principal Silvia Calandrelli, adding to Rai Storia and Rai Scuola.

In 19th September 2016, The channel is launched in high-definition simulcast from Tivùsat. With the change of emission over the same period, the channel began broadcasting the historic art and cultural programs on the 4: 3 aspect ratio in 16: 9 pillarbox, along with the other digital terrestrial Rai channels that started.

In 10th April 2017, The channel was changed a new logo
