Trace Urban is French music television network owned by Trace Partners. The channel broadcasts music videos related to urban, rap, R&B, hip-hop and dancehall.
History[]
Founded in 1994, under the name MCM Africa is a variation of MCM owned by Europe 1 Communication.
It was sold in 2002 to Olivier Laouchez, former boss of hip-hop label Secteur Ä who finds partners, including Goldman Sachs in the person of Richard Wayner.
On April 27, 2003, Olivier Laouchez renamed MCM Africa to Trace TV becomes the first international channel dedicated to urban music, it is expanding rapidly international, present in 60 countries.
In 2005, The implementation of localized versions of the channel allow an accentuation of the international development of Trace TV, according to the markets.
In 2006, The channel received Hot Bird Awards for the best music television in Europe.
In 2009, The channel opened an office in New York.
On December 15, 2010, Trace TV becomes Trace Urban. Trace Partners launches Trace Radio, an urban radio of Goom digital radio station.
In 2013, the first edition of Trace Urban Music Awards, the awards ceremony for the best francophone urban artists, takes place. Trace launches its new 100% social and 100% personalized website. On the new website, the user benefits from a personalized recommendation of content according to his tastes and his social profile, thanks to an optimal exploitation of Facebook's Open Graph. Trace launches Trace Stars (renamed Trace Music Star) in South Africa, a music talent discovery contest by phone with Wyclef Jean for godfather
In 2014, the first edition of Airtel Trace Music Star, a pan-African telephone music talent contest, is held by Akon. Trace is also 75% bought by the Swedish group Modern Times Group.
2015 sees the birth of the first edition of Trace Music Star in France and in the French overseas departments, a digital casting in search of the next Wati B label signature.
In 2016, the second edition of Airtel Trace Music Star is sponsored by Keri Hilson.
