Viasat 4 is Norwegian private television network owned by Nordic Entertainment Group. The channel broadcasts news, series, children's and sports programmings.
History[]
In 2000, Scandinavian media company Modern Times Group launches a new channel called Viasat Plus. The channel broadcast re-runs of sit-coms shown on TV3 earlier and soap operas. Viasat Plus was broadcast in Norway, and was replaced by ZTV in 2002. In Denmark there is a similar channel TV3+.
In 2002, ZTV returned to Norway, replacing the Viasat Plus channel. The second time around it quickly established itself as popular with younger viewers, this time with a greater emphasis on music and especially Norwegian artists.
On September 8, 2007 the channel had its last broadcast, and was replaced by Viasat 4.
The channel was launched on 8 September 2007, a week after the launch of the digital terrestrial television network in Norway, replacing ZTV which ceased broadcasting shortly before.
Viasat 4 was originally to be named TV4, but after complaints from Swedish TV4 AB at the Patent Office, the channel was renamed 4 before becoming Viasat 4.
The original intention was that the channel would broadcast free-to-air via RiksTV. The operator of the commercial muxes was, however, intending to broadcast pay television, so the channel would be a part of the encrypted RiksTV package. In 2010, Viasat 4 showed 16 World Cup matches from South Africa, including the bronze final between Germany and Uruguay. Viasat obtained the rights from NRK.
